Teng Mingda, a leader in the pen making industry

In 1950, Teng Mingda enrolled in the Institute of Chemical Engineering at Zhejiang University to pursue his master’s degree. Later, by chance, he entered the pen industry and worked diligently in the pen industry for more than 50 years, slowly becoming an industry leader from knowing nothing about the industry.

In the 1950s, the main writing instruments in the pen industry were gold pens, fountain pens and pencils, of which gold pens and fountain pens belonged to the tap pen. Teng Mingda set foot in the pen industry is the first project involved in the development of the performance of the tap pen test method, when technical information and testing equipment is quite scarce, he was in the industry on the basis of the original design, while testing, while improving, after more than two years to complete the development of 16 tap pens and parts of the quality test method. Among them, the tap pen test leakage temperature difference test, continuous writing test, intermittent writing test, nib wear test and other 14 testing items published by the Light Industry Publishing House in 1958, the “tap pen quality inspection methods” included. Later the line standard QB 180-62 “tap water pen”, the national standard GB 6140 “tap water pen” also refers to the adoption of these items of testing methods.

Teng Mingda not only participated in the development of the testing methods and standards for tap pens, but also participated in the scientific research project of tap pens – “the structure principle of tap pens”. In 1989, he and Qiu Zugan of Fudan University and Zhao Songsheng of Shanghai Hero Gold Pen Factory continued their research on the principle of “Tap Pen” based on their original results. Mechanical principles and applications of structural design” topic. The results of this project won the second prize of Scientific Progress of the Ministry of Light Industry of China in 1994, the second prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shanghai in 1995, and the third prize of National Technical Invention in 1997, and also became the main content of various tap pens related training materials.

Won the third prize of national technical invention in 1997

In 1958, Teng Mingda and team members referred to the formula and process of Polysergen 272 produced by Germany’s Romhus plant, and adjusted the copolymer monomer and the ratio of each formula several times. In 1961, 372 plastic passed the technical appraisal, and the indexes were close to the level of imported 272, which provided technical support for the localization of pencil making plastic.

How can these results of technical research better serve the industry? This is something Teng Mingda has been thinking about. 1979, the pen technology information station decided to publish “pen” publication, elected Teng Mingda as the editorial board director. After a year of preparation, in January 1980, “Pen” was officially published, and in 1988 it was renamed “China Pen”, which is the only professional and technical journal for domestic and international public circulation in the pen industry, mainly publishing scientific research, basic theory, applied technology, scientific management, technical training and translation of domestic and foreign pen technical standards and patent documents, reporting on the market dynamics of the pen industry and The journal also reports on the market trends of the pen industry and industry development trends.

During the decades in the pen industry, Teng Mingda has been dedicated and diligent, summarizing what he has learned in his work and preparing a lot of technical materials, such as “Tap Pen Structure Principle”, “National Ballpoint Pen Structure Principle”, and “Pen Plastic Coloring”. “Pen plastic coloring”, “pen injection mold design and manufacturing”, “mold heat treatment” and “surface plating of metal parts “etc. He has also hosted many technical training courses, training a large number of professionals for the industry.

Teng Mingda also participated in the compilation of technical materials such as “Writing and Drawing Materials”, “Handbook of Pen Making Office Machinery Production Equipment”, “Tap Pen Structure Principle and Design Anthology”, “Wooden Pole Pencil Manufacturing Anthology”, “Design and Manufacturing of Pulsating Movable Pencils”, “Tap Pen Manufacturing Process”, “Ballpoint Pen Design and Manufacturing Anthology”, and “Pen Making Technical Dictionary (Handbook)”.

The most famous one – “A Family of Pens”, a series of scientific fiction, is a funny and humorous book with many illustrations. It mainly introduces the development and history of various writing instruments. It is easy to understand and vivid, and is a good science book

At the age of 96, Mr. Teng Mingda still insists on studying every day and is concerned about the development of the pen-making industry. We would like to wish him a long and healthy life!
